Sydney Roosters superstar Sonny Bill Williams is facing a two-match suspension for his shoulder charge on Willie Mason.
Williams was on Monday charged with a grade-three careless high tackle by the match review committee after being placed on report for his hit to the head of Newcastle forward and former Canterbury teammate Mason in Sunday’s 28-12 NRL win at Hunter Stadium.
The backrower is set to miss Friday’s match against Penrith and Saturday week’s clash with Canberra unless he can successfully contest the charge or get it downgraded at a judiciary hearing.
Earlier, fellow Roosters forward Boyd Cordner admitted losing Williams to suspension would be a massive blow to the Roosters but he was confident the second-placed side could cope without him after doing so when he was injured recently.
“Obviously Sonny’s massive to our team and it would be a massive blow but I think, like we showed last week against the Sharks, we can perform without him,” Cordner said.
“We’re just hoping for the best with Sonny at the moment.”
