Scott hails Steve Williams effect

Adam Scott has hailed the influence of master caddie Steve Williams as the duo look to mastermind another major championship victory.

Scott will attempt bridge a three-shot gap on leader Lee Westwood at the British Open on Sunday in a bid to add a second major title to his Masters triumph in April.

In an intriguing twist, Scott will play the final round at Muirfield alongside world No.1 Tiger Woods, pitting New Zealand Williams next to his former employer.

Woods and Williams, who combined for 13 major victories, have crossed paths several times in competition since their less-than-amicable split in 2011.

But never with as much at stake as there is on Sunday.

Scott said he wouldn’t want anyone else by his side, especially on a course that had humbled some of the world’s best players this week.

“He prides himself on keeping a man at par or better, no matter how hard the course is,” Scott said of Williams after a carding a one-under 70 on Saturday to enter the final round in outright fourth position at even par.

“We play it in a way according to that, I think, so we’re right around the mark.

“At times when you want to push, he’s there to pull the reins if need be.

“He knows it’s 72 holes and it can’t be won on the sixth on Friday. He’s got the big picture in mind when it comes to the 72-hole outcome.”

Williams played a vital role in Scott becoming Australia’s first Masters champion at Augusta and the world No.4 said he continued to benefit from his bag man’s experience.

“It’s absolutely rubbed off on me in the last couple of years,” Scott said.

“To the point where I think we just walk out there with almost the same mindset now.”
