Outgoing Greater Western Sydney AFL coach Kevin Sheedy has anointed emerging superstar Jeremy Cameron as a future captain of the Giants.
The second-season key forward kicked four goals in the Giants’ 39-point loss to Essendon at Skoda Stadium on Saturday, taking his tally for the year to 43.
“He’ll obviously be captain of the club one day because that’s the spirit we need in this club,” Sheedy said of Cameron.
Essendon coach James Hird said he couldn’t speak highly enough of 20-year-old Cameron, who has kicked 13 goals in three games against the Bombers.
He felt the prospect of Cameron lining up alongside Lance Franklin was a frightening thought, if the Giants succeeded in getting the Hawks champion to Sydney.
“Buddy and Cameron together, that would scare most opposition,” Hird said.
“We just marvel at Jeremy Cameron.”
Cameron himself has given little thought to a potential partnership with Franklin.
“I don’t really think about that too much, I just concentrate on my football, and the team,” Cameron said.
“If that happens at the end of the year, then it happens.”
Cameron has already achieved one aim this year.
“There was a little target just to probably beat last year (29 goals) and get a little bit better each year,” Cameron said.
“I focus my game on a few different areas, more my leading patterns.
“How you can get used a little bit more, follow the ball a little bit more and work together with other forwards.”
Hird joked he would finish with a pristine coaching record against his old Essendon mentor Sheedy, who leaves GWS at the end of this season.
“He’s had a huge influence on our football club, four premierships, 27 years,” Hird said.
“He’s an icon of the game … everyone has huge amount of respect for him.”
Sheedy praised Hird for his efforts in what has been a tumultuous season for the Bombers.
“He’s got his team in the top four at the moment, so it’s a damn good effort under the pressure they’ve been,” Sheedy said.
