Scott wants to hit back for Aussie sport

Adam Scott wants to strike back for Australian sport at this week’s British Open – and hopefully inspire the Ashes team to do the same.

The world No.4 golfer admits it’s been a difficult time to be in the United Kingdom following England’s win in the first cricket Test and the British Lions’ rugby union series win over the Wallabies.

He can think of no better way to get Australian sport heading back in the right direction than by striking in enemy territory at Muirfield.

“Absolutely, I’d love to get in here this week and maybe spur our cricket team along to levelling the Test series,” Masters champion Scott said on Wednesday.

“It’s a tough time being an Aussie over here at the moment, to be honest with you.

“I move very quietly around town.”

Scott took a brief break from his intense Open practice schedule to watch Australia’s gallant run chase on the final day at Trent Bridge on Sunday.

Despite Australia falling 14 runs short of victory, Scott described the match as “incredible.”

He’s also pinned his hopes on Ashton Agar, the teenage sensation who is nicknamed “Scotty” due to his resemblance to Australia’s top ranked golfer.

“Everyone’s been telling me (about his resemblance and nickname). I think it’s great,” Scott said.

“Honestly, I hope he’s the spark our Australian team needs going forward.

“He’s a young kid and has come out with 98 on debut and kept us in the first Test.

“He’s obviously got what it takes so hopefully he’s the spark for our team for this summer and beyond.”

The 142nd Open begins on Thursday with Scott looking to bounce back from a final round meltdown at last year’s event.
