Hayne backs Dugan to star for NSW

Jarryd Hayne has backed Josh Dugan to produced a performance that can help clinch a first NSW State of Origin series victory since 2005.

Hayne was ruled out of the series decider on Monday after failing to recover from the hamstring injury that forced him to sit out game two.

The Parramatta skipper watched the Blues trained on Thursday at Coogee Oval and had a long chat with the St George Illawarra star Dugan who has again taken his spot in the side.

Dugan was one of the few NSW players to emerge with any credit from the 26-6 loss to the Maroons and Hayne said the No.1 shirt was in good hands.

“I was just talking to him about game two,” Hayne said.

“My only advice was the back three helping each other out a bit more.

“Their (Queensland) kicking game was on point in game two and we’ve got to work out how to get the ball in attacking positions better.”

“Duges is in great form and is great to see him back, he is a real rangy type of player and able to break tackles.

“He is very strong for his build and if he gets the chance in game three he will be one of our best.”

Hayne admitted it will be tough to sit and watch the team in action from the sidelines having been an integral part of the 14-6 win in the opener.

However, he said he wouldn’t avoid the camp and his desire for a series win was as strong as it would be if he was playing.

“I knew it was coming and I’d prepared myself for it,” he said.

“But you have to move on. It will be one of the toughest games I’ll ever have to watch – but I’ll enjoy it as much as I can.”
