Sydney co-captain Jarrad McVeigh says the reigning premiers can’t afford to treat any AFL team lightly, especially one coming off their most impressive performance of the season.
Melbourne host the injury-depleted Swans at the MCG on Sunday and will be riding high after a much-needed win, over the Western Bulldogs at the same venue last Saturday night. The Demons led by over seven goals early in the last quarter, and held on to triumph by three points despite a late fade out.
McVeigh suggested the Demons had been re-energised under caretaker coach Neil Craig, who boasts a 1-1 record since Mark Neeld’s dismissal and is yet to decide if he’ll apply for the full-time job.
“They played really well on the weekend. Obviously with a new coach coming in, it looks like the players have got a new lease on life,” McVeigh said on Wednesday.
“They’re playing a little bit differently, so it’ll be a good challenge.
“We’ll look at what they do, but it’s more about us and how we prepare.
“If we produce the form that we know we can, we think we can win the game.”
Swans trio Shane Mumford (jaw), Sam Reid (quad) and Mitch Morton (quad) will have fitness tests ahead of Sunday’s clash.
The three completed Tuesday’s light training run, but will face a sterner test at Friday’s closed session at the SCG.
Sydney coach John Longmire was also quick to praise a “much-improved” Melbourne team.
“They looked fantastic on the weekend,” he said.
“They’re playing with some real flair and run. They have got a big forward line, and we need to make sure we keep our form going.”
