Preview:
It’s Sydney vs Carlton on Friday night, 7.50pm at the SCG. The Swans will go into this one as favourites, even after suffering one of the upsets of the season by losing to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium last round. While Carlton are coming into this encounter fresh from a rest, with their disappointing results so far in 2013, they will struggle at the SCG. The Swans will have to do without Adam Goodes with a knee injury, but should have no trouble overcoming the Blues at home.

Ladder meaningless until finals: Malthouse

Carlton currently sit outside the AFL’s top eight but coach Mick Malthouse has never been one for ladder gazing and senses his side is capable of matching it with the best.

The Blues’ testing mid-season run continues on Friday night when they resume after the bye to take on Sydney at the SCG.

Having succumbed to competitive losses against Essendon and Hawthorn in their past two starts, another defeat could potentially leave Carlton two wins outside the top eight.

But Malthouse is not thinking in such terms.

On Thursday he was buoyed by his charges’ recent form, he said.

“Are we better than six (wins) and six (losses)? No, the record shows six and six,” Malthouse said in Sydney.

“But we are playing some very good football. We’re playing football that matches the best in the competition.

“What we haven’t been able to do is put that away for four quarters – and in today’s football it is very hard to do that.

“…We don’t worry about (the) round 12 or round 13 ladder. The only time you have to worry about that is round 23.”

The Swans are coming off what co-captain Jarrad McVeigh termed their worst performance of the season, a shock 18-point loss to Port Adelaide.

They’ll also be without eight premiership players, with dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes (knee) the latest to join a lengthy injury list.

But Malthouse dismissed the notion his side would be facing the reigning premiers at a good time.

“I was always under the impression it’s your best 22 running down the race. Blokes up in the grandstand can’t do much for you,” he said.

“Let’s not get caught up with who’s out of the side, it’s who is in in the side.”

“…I could say the same with Marc Murphy (who will miss the game with a fractured cheekbone).”

Malthouse was full of praise for the Swans.

“If you analyse the other 17 sides and say who gives you the toughest game of football physically, it would be Sydney,” the three-time premiership coach said.

“Over the last 10 to 12 years I’ve stated that Sydney is a side I like coaching against, because they are honest, they’re tough and they’re a benchmark.

“They were the best side at the end of last year and right now

are in that top echelon that give teams a reality check.”
