Aussie bowlers struggle against Somerset

The Australians certainly haven’t bowled like the best attack in the world to start their opening Ashes tour match against Somerset in Taunton.

Somerset were 2-220 after 57 overs at tea on day one of the first-class match in Darren Lehmann’s debut game as national coach.

Former coach Mickey Arthur declared Australia had a better fast bowling arsenal than England, however Wednesday’s struggles indicated there’s plenty of work to be done if that kind of statement is to be proved correct.

The wicket didn’t offer much for the bowlers, and the quartet of quicks found the going tough for the most part to create opportunities.

James Pattinson was the pick of them and removed Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick in just the fourth over, caught in the deep.

Pattinson became expensive to have figures of 1-50 from 13 overs.

Dumped England opener Nick Compton (81) and Chris Jones (96no) put on 170 runs for the second wicket, before a brilliant catch from captain Michael Clarke finally earned a breakthrough for spinner Nathan Lyon (1-30).

To get rid of Compton, Clarke had to move sharply to his left at first slip, managing to hold onto the ball despite it going in and out of his hand twice before he hit the ground.

The skipper ended up layed out at full stretch behind keeper Brad Haddin.

Lyon’s form was encouraging for Australia, with several lbw shouts and narrow misses past the outside edge.

In contract, Mitchell Starc is a major concern two weeks out from the first Test against England at Trent Bridge.

Starc wasn’t overly expensive at 0-28 from 13, but of more concern is he still seems short of a gallop following ankle surgery.

James Faulkner had his moments but was 0-49 from 10 overs while Peter Siddle bowled a little short to have 0-44 from nine.

Surprisingly, Shane Watson is yet to bowl an over.

Watson has been named to open the batting alongside Ed Cowan, with Clarke due to come in at second drop and Phil Hughes listed for the unfamiliar position of No.5.
