Australia coach Lehmann casts his net

There’s nothing subtle about Darren Lehmann.

Not in appearance and certainly not at training.

There’s no blending into the background with Boof at net sessions.

No standing behind the batsmen or bowlers with arms crossed and lips sealed.

Lehmann is loud and dynamic.

Cricket might be an individual sport masked in a team game.

But Lehmann doesn’t leave people to their own devices. He won’t let wickets fall and wides pass in the nets without conversation.

Lehmann prefers a style closer to footy coach, than traditional cricket mentor.

In contrast, Mickey Arthur’s method was to be a quieter presence.

There were no barking instructions, as players went about their business almost methodically.

Messages were delivered to Australian players in private with a gentle arm around the shoulder.

All coaches are different, and there’s no suggestion players didn’t appreciate the approach of Arthur, who boasts a strong international record of success.

But the differences in persona at net sessions between the sacked Arthur and his replacement is telling.

In a young team that’s reeling from the losses in experience of players Ponting and Hussey and coaches Langer and McDermott, Australia were crying out for a more authoritative voice.

Someone capable of telling it straight if it needed to be told, but still commanding respect.

If Lehmann’s style as assistant with Australia A is anything to go by, the respected former Test batsman treats his training ground as a workshop not a library.

If you bowl a bad ball, Lehmann will yell across the nets.

If you play a good shot, Lehmann will yell across the nets.

He makes his players think outside the box they’re standing in and demands them to play out match-type scenarios as they practice.

Lehmann doesn’t stand still. He’s on his feet and he’s across everything.

There’s no misunderstanding that it’s his nets you’re practising in.

You’re training with your team not in your own cocoon.

Why?

Because Lehmann says so. He’s the coach.
