Newcastle utility Kevin Naiqama is set to join his older brother Wes at Penrith next season after signing a two-year deal with the NRL club.
The Panthers on Friday announced the 24-year-old had agreed to terms for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
Naiqama has played 12 NRL games since starting at the Knights in 2008, when his brother was still at the club.
“It was a difficult decision for me to make but I am excited for this next adventure and hopefully it is the right step to better my footy and make me a future first grader,” he told the Knights’ website.
“Having Wes (Naiqama) there is a bonus and it has all worked out well.”
Naiqama has struggled to get a regular spot in the Knights’ starting backline, with the likes of Darius Boyd, Akuila Uate and James McManus limiting him to just three games this season.
Knights chief executive Matthew Gidley said the club was pleased Naiqama was able to find a club where he could play regular first-grade football.
“We hope that he can fulfil his potential by playing week-in, week-out in the NRL,” Gidley said.
“We certainly wish Kevin all the best.”
Panthers general manager of rugby league Phil Moss said Naiqama’s speed and versatility will add depth to their roster.
“And he will no doubt become a crowd pleaser,” he added.
