Reid wins long qualifier at Wimbledon

Australian Matt Reid has upset Indian Somdev Devvarman in a gruelling opening-round Wimbledon qualifying match.

Reid had to battle long and hard before seeing off the challenge of the No.22 seed 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 18-16.

The 22-year-old from NSW now plays Amir Weintraub of Israel in the next round.

Also through to the second round of qualifying at Roehampton are fellow Australians James Duckworth and Samuel Groth.

Duckworth – who qualified for last month’s French Open – thumped No.10 seed Dusan Lojovic of Serbia 6-3 6-1 and Groth beat local hope Josh Goodall 6-4 7-6 (8-6).

But countrymen John-Patrick Smith and Matthew Barton fell at the first hurdle.

Ash Barty, Casey Dellacqua, Anastasia Rodionova, Olivia Rogowska and Sacha Jones are the five Australian entrants in the women’s qualifying competition, which gets underway on Tuesday.

Barty and Dellacqua won the doubles title on grass at Birmingham last week.

Rogowska has been handed the toughest first-round clash against Czech Petra Cetkovska, who hit a career-high ranking of No.25 a year ago.

She has since battled serious injuries to her right ankle and left foot.
