Victory masks the pain for the Johnson

Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson says Sunday’s hard-earned victory against the Sydney Roosters was the perfect anaesthetic to the pain from his troublesome groin.

The Warriors shocked the high-flying Roosters 23-12 at Allianz Stadium with Johnson one of several players who had starring roles in securing a fourth successive victory for NRL’s most mercurial outfit.

Johnson was only able to kick one conversion from in front of the posts late in the game with Feleti Mateo taking over his duties, but he did manage to kick a field goal in final minute to ice the result for his side.

However, it was his brilliant tackle on Michael Jennings when he made up almost 10 metres and hauled down one of the NRL’s fastest players to prevent a certain try that gave his team a huge lift in the first half.

“It’s a bit tender and it got worse as the game went on, but it doesn’t matter now, we won the game,” Johnson said.

“Running after Jennings probably wasn’t the best for it, but I was there at that time and it was all for something.

“The best thing about it was that we got something for it and won it with two breakaway tries.”

Johnson was the poster boy for all the Warriors’ ills when they shipped in 60 points to Penrith last month and was hooked midway through the second half at Centrebet Stadium.

The team have not lost since hitting rock bottom that night, and Johnson admitted hearing from his teammates that he was not pulling his weight at a no-holds-barred meeting the following day was hard but necessary.

“It was a testing time and it was tough to hear what you are doing wrong, but you have to take it on,” he said.

“There was only one way to go and you can only do it with your teammates.

“It shows what sort of people we are and what we went through together has brought us closer together.”
