Injuries compound French rugby problems

France are set to be without experienced internationals Frederic Michalak and Louis Picamoles for the third and final Test against the All Blacks next week because of injury.

Fly-half Michalak will definitely miss the match in New Plymouth after dislocating his shoulder in the closing stages of the 30-0 loss in the second Test at Christchurch on Saturday.

It ended a forgettable night for the 66-Test veteran, who made several errors, including two botched dropped goal attempts and a missed penalty kick.

Powerful No.8 Picamoles, among France’s best in a Test where they were outplayed, suffered a hip injury which forced him off with half an hour to play.

He was to undergo scans but coach Philippe Saint-Andre rated him an outside chance to play on Saturday.

Saint-Andre said his team fell down in numerous areas, most notably failing to match the hosts’ urgency and clinical game plan.

Seventeen missed tackles and six lost lineouts exacerbated their problems.

“New Zealand kicked for position and waited for our mistakes. They stole a lot of our lineouts,” he said.

“And we didn’t score because the New Zealand defence was fantastic.”

It was the first time in 23 years, dating back 270 Tests, that France have been held scoreless.

They had scored points in all their previous 52 Tests against the All Blacks.

France conceded the Dave Gallaher Trophy for the ninth time out of the 10 times it has been contested against New Zealand since 2000.
