Port and GWS vie to end AFL losing streak

Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy reckons his Giants can get their first AFL win of the season against out-of-form Port Adelaide, who are intent on halting their own losing streak.

Port’s early season bubble has well and truly burst with five straight wins followed by the same amount of losses.

They take on GWS at Skoda Stadium on Sunday, having lost the corresponding fixture last year, when the Giants scored their first win at their main home venue.

The Giants haven’t won since, but Sheedy believes this weekend presents an opportunity for his young side to break their 2013 drought, against a team mired in their own losing streak and coming off a bye.

“It’s a very good opportunity for us to play well,” Sheedy told AAP.

“Because if you’ve lost five and you haven’t played, you don’t know what you are going to turn up to do.”

Port coach Ken Hinkley hoped the bye would freshen his team up and expected them to really attack the game.

Port stalwart Kane Cornes will make a club record 256th appearance, surpassing the record he currently shares with Warren Tredrea.

Cornes identified the area Port had fallen off in during their losing run and needed to remedy that on Sunday.

“I think our contested ball and our tackles really dropped off, so we need to pick that up,” Cornes said.

“That’s probably their (the Giants) standout area, so we need to really match them in that side of the game.”

While Hinkley has coached just 10 senior games compared to over 1000 for Sheedy, he is already ahead of the GWS and former Essendon mentor in one regard.

“I lost five of my first six and he’s won five and lost five, so he’s a mile ahead of me already,” Sheedy joked.
