Sara Tomic defeated in French Open juniors

Australian junior Sara Tomic has followed her big brother Bernard in suffering an early exit at the French Open.

The 15-year-old lost 7-5 6-3 to Croatian Jana Fett in the first round of the girls singles on Sunday.

Tomic, like her 20-year-old brother, aspires to be world No.1 one day but she is not coached by their father John, instead working with Johnny Stamenovic on the Gold Coast.

Her father was not at the match at Roland Garros after having his tour credentials suspended pending an assault charge.

The 56th-ranked junior reached the second round of the Australian Open girls’ tournament in January.

Bernard Tomic lost in the first round of the men’s event, retiring hurt while trailing Romanian Victor Hanescu by two sets to love on Tuesday.

It was his first match since his father and coach was charged with assaulting his son’s training partner, Frenchman Thomas Drouet, in Madrid on May 4.

John Tomic denies assaulting Drouet, saying he was acting in self defence, and the case will be heard at a Madrid court in October.

Sara Tomic was the only Australian in the girls’ draw but the nation is better represented in the boys, with five entrants including top seed Nick Kyrgios.

Jay Andrijic and Omar Jasika had lost first-round boys’ matches early on Sunday.
