The Western Bulldogs have rallied for an outstanding 11-point upset win over St Kilda in their AFL match at Etihad Stadium.

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt, one of their best players, was knocked senseless in the last minute as the Bulldogs won on Saturday 17.8 (110) to 15.11 (101).

It was only the Bulldogs’ second win in their last 20 matches and came after a week of intense scrutiny following their loss to Gold Coast.

Midfielder Koby Stevens starred for the ‘Dogs with 31 disposals and three goals.

Ryan Griffen overcame a fierce tag from St Kilda’s Clint Jones to have 30 touches.

Riewoldt continued his outstanding season with four goals and was the Saints’ last hope when he went for mark with about a minute left.

But he was concussed in a clash of heads and was helped from the ground.

Midfielder Jack Steven also starred for the Saints, picking up 25 possessions.

The surprise loss again highlights that the Saints are now a team in transition.

In a pulsating last term, the Bulldogs rallied from 14 points down.

They kicked six of the last eight goals in the match.

One of them was the match highlight, courtesy of veteran Robert Murphy.

He went for a run and baulked superbly around Saints defender Rhys Stanley to goal and reduce the margin to two points.

Moments later, sub Daniel Giansiracusa snapped a goal at 14 minutes to put the ‘Dogs in front for the first time since early in the second term.

Dylan Addison’s mark and fourth goal gave them a decisive 15-point lead at 20 minutes.

Farren Ray kicked a freakish goal at 22 minutes to keep the Saints in it, but that turned out to be their last shot.

Earlier the ‘Dogs paid dearly for a lack of scoring options, most glaringly late in the second term.

They controlled play for about 10 minutes, but could only manage one behind and trailed by 10 points at the long break.

At halftime, the only statistic for their main key forward Jones was one free against.

Riewoldt kicked a great goal and almost took a brilliant one-handed mark that would have resulted in another as the Saints improved to a match-high 19-point lead in the third term.

But just when the Saints looked to have the game under control, the ‘Dogs had a three-goal run in time-on to level the scores.
