Manager Roberto Martinez is to decide his future “in the next 24 hours,” Wigan chairman Dave Whelan says.
Martinez has been linked with the vacant Everton and Stoke City jobs, but Wigan want him to stay on.
The north-west club were relegated from the Premier League this season but won the FA Cup for the first time.
“Roberto has asked for 24 hours to think about what is going on,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “Tomorrow is D-Day.”
The 39-year-old Spaniard, a former player at Wigan, has been heavily linked with a move, but Whelan said he was hopeful he would stay to help the club return to the top flight.
“I had a meeting with Roberto at noon today,” Whelan said. “It was very constructive and Roberto is a very honest person to talk to.
“He is so disappointed at getting relegated, as I am, that I don’t think he has come round yet to the idea that we have just got to gear up, accept it – that’s football – and get back as soon as possible, that’s next season.
“Tomorrow it is a straightforward meeting and he is going to say ‘yes I want to stay at Wigan Athletic’ or ‘I wish to move and take my services elsewhere’.”
If Martinez does say he wants to leave, Whelan said there would be no hard feelings.
“We have had no approaches from anyone yet,” Whelan said. “We are very honest with each other, Roberto has been dedicated to Wigan Athletic and he wants another 24 hours to think about it and talk to his wife.”
“There is a massive, massive amount of loyalty between Roberto and myself. If he wants to stay, that is fantastic and I will be over the moon. But if decides he wants to move his career I will fully respect that and I will give him every bit of support I can.”
