Valuable Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead has agreed to a contract extension which will keep him with the AFL club until the end of 2016.
Roughead, who could have become a free agent in 2015, said his intention was to remain with the Hawks for the remainder of his career.
“Any time you get to extend your footy career, it’s always a good feeling, and now I suppose I can say I’ll be a one club player,” Roughead told the hawthornfc.com.au website.
“Hawthorn has been very good to me. I came here when I was a 17-year-old and, when this deal is up, I’ll be 29. Twelve or thirteen years goes pretty quickly.
“For them to show faith in me, it was pretty much a no-brainer. When I’m 29 turning 30, I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere else.”
Roughead has developed into one of the Hawks’ most versatile big men and was critical in the side’s win over the Sydney Swans on Saturday night, gathering 27 disposals and booting four goals.
Drafted at No.2 in 2004, the 26-year-old has played a total of 166 matches, including the Hawks’ 2008 premiership.
Roughead joins Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, David Hale, Luke Breust and Ben Stratton in re-signing in recent weeks.
The club’s biggest name Lance Franklin, a restricted free agent, continues to insist he will not decide on his immediate future until the end of the season.
