World No.1 Tiger Woods has claimed his fourth win of the year and 78th victory in his US PGA Tour career, triumphing in the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida.

Woods closed with a two-under par 70 to finish at 13-under, two clear of rookie Swede David Lingmerth and Americans Kevin Streelman and Jeff Maggert who finished tied second.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia was tied for the lead with two holes to play but hit two balls in the water on the famous island green par 3 17th to fall away and he finished eighth.

Marc Leishman, who had stormed to within one of the lead early in his round, fell back into a tie for eighth at seven-under par to be the leading Australian.
