Reds prop Holmes joins 100-cap club

Stalwart prop Greg Holmes will play his 100th match for Queensland in Friday night’s Super Rugby clash against the injury-hit Sharks at Suncorp Stadium.

Holmes will become the 26th Reds’ player to join the prestigious 100-caps club when he lines up at loosehead in a tough scrummaging battle against Springbok tighthead Jannie du Plessis.

Reds coaching boss Ewen McKenzie named a 22-man squad on Wednesday rather than a starting 15 and bench, but confirmed the 29-year-old former Wallaby would start.

Holmes becomes just the third Reds prop to reach the century mark following Dan Crowley (124) and Sam Pilecki (122), and first since former captain John Roe in 2008.

“It’s quite humbling when you think about the calibre of players who have played 100 games for Queensland and the service they have given to the Reds,” he said.

Wallabies winger Dom Shipperley has succumbed to a lingering back injury to be the only change to the Queensland squad with Rod Davies returning from a hamstring twinge.

McKenzie will announce his team on Thursday but hinted there would be more changes on top of the likely return of Davies and tighthead prop James Slipper following the 11-11 draw with the Western Force.

Queensland Reds squad: Backs – Jono Lance, Rod Davies, Anthony Faingaa, Ben Tapuai, Digby Ioane, Quade Cooper, Will Genia, Ben Lucas, Chris Feauai-Sautia.

Forwards – Jake Schatz, Liam Gill, Ed Quirk, Beau Robinson, Jarrad Butler, Ed O’Donoghue, James Horwill, Rob Simmons, James Slipper, Saia Faingaa, James Hanson, Greg Holmes, Albert Anae.
