New Zealand’s Sevens rugby players need only to win their Glasgow tournament quarter-final on Sunday to secure an 11th World Sevens Series title in 14 seasons.
New Zealand, the only team to reach the quarter-finals in all eight tournaments so far, swept all three of their pool games, beating Scotland 28-0 in Saturday’s finale to condemn the host to playoffs at next weekend’s London Sevens to hold their top-15 core status for next season.
The Kiwis can wrap up their third straight world series against Argentina in the quarter-finals, which also feature South Africa versus United States, Fiji against England and Wales versus Canada.
Also unbeaten in pool play were Fiji, South Africa and Wales while Samoa, Kenya, Australia and France were notable teams who failed to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals.
Play in Pool C Australia beat Spain 42-14 then lost to Argentina 17-10 and Fiji 19-17.
South Africa, Fiji and Samoa are locked in a tight battle for second place in the series standings.
