Rebel Robinson signs for Hawke’s Bay

Melbourne Rebels’ New Zealand hooker Ged Robinson has signed a provincial contract with Hawke’s Bay.

Robinson, who has forged a successful three-season stint with the Australian franchise, announced on Friday he will play two seasons for the Magpies in the NPC, beginning this year.

The 29-year-old will fill the boots of All Blacks rake Hika Elliot who made headlines when he was released by the union after several seasons of service.

Hawke’s Bay have also signed London-born prop Max Lahiff, 23, who has been signed by the Rebels for two seasons from next year.

Current London Irish club prop Lahiff is eligible to play for Australia.

Former Junior All Black Robinson previously played provincial rugby for Manawatu and Wellington and one Super Rugby season with the Hurricanes before crossing the Tasman in 2011.

He could come into the equation for an All Blacks jersey ahead of the 2015 World Cup, with incumbent hookers Keven Mealamu and Andrew Hore, both 34, facing a challenge to be selected for the tournament.
