Darley filly Guelph has upset triple crown plans for Overreach by winning the Group One Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
Overreach was sent out an odds-on favourite following her Golden Slipper win last week, but she was no match for the finishing burst of Guelph, backed from $12 to $9.50.
Coming from midfield, Guelph overhauled Scandiva who had only just got the better of Overreach.
Guelph finished fourth in the Golden Slipper, but she relished the extra 200m on offer in the Sires to post another Group One win for her sire Exceed And Excel.
Overreach took third placing after jumping with her customary early speed to lead the field.
The Champagne Stakes is the third leg of an autumn triple crown for two-year-olds and it will be run over 1600m at Randwick on April 27.
“She was impressive today and I’ll have to give a lot of thought to backing her up in a fortnight,” trainer Peter Snowden said.
