We can’t handle AFL success says Lion

Only a few days after celebrating their great AFL era, Brisbane plummeted back to earth with a thud.

Lions midfielder Tom Rockliff said Saturday’s comprehensive round-one loss to the Western Bulldogs showed the Lions are yet to learn how to win consistently.

In between their NAB Cup final win over Carlton and Saturday’s 68-point drubbing, the current Brisbane team attended a club celebration of the 2001-03 “three-peat” premierships.

Current coach Michael Voss captained the three premiership teams and captain Jonathan Brown was a key member of those sides a decade ago.

“To achieve what they achieved … was an amazing effort,” Rockliff told Channel Seven’s Game Day.

“We spoke about it a little after the game.

“To handle success and back up and do what they did – obviously our group at the moment can’t handle success, with the NAB Cup win and letting ourselves down.”

After the three flags, Brisbane lost the 2004 grand final to Port Adelaide.

Their only finals appearance since has been 2009, when they were sixth.

“We have to build our own history now and you have to forge your own path, the way you want to go about it,” Rockliff said.

“We haven’t been able to do that for a while.”
