Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has ruled out a comeback to the struggling national team for this year’s Ashes series.
Receiving the award as Australia’s Sheffield Shield player of the year, Ponting said he wasn’t contemplating a return after coach Mickey Arthur told media in India his side was missing the former skipper and fellow veteran Mike Hussey.
“International cricket’s long passed me by,” Ponting told the audience at Bellerive.
Ponting said he was disappointed in the Australian team’s performance in the Indian series, which they trail 3-0, but believed they had shown some fight in the third Test loss.
“As long as they bounce back this week (in the fourth Test) and put up a good show,” he said.
The 38-year-old, who quit international cricket in December, topped the Shield run-scorers’ list with 875 at 87.50 this season.
Victoria’s Aaron Finch was named state one-day player of the year after averaging 84 in the competition.
The women’s state player of the year award was shared between VicSpirit’s Meg Lanning and Western Fury’s Nicole Bolton, while the Fury’s Jenny Wallace took home the WT20 gong.
