Tasmania struck back with four wickets after lunch on day two of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at Bellerive.
At tea on Friday, the Bushrangers were 4-208 in their first innings, 161 behind the home side’s 6(dec)-369, with both skipper Cameron White and David Hussey unbeaten on 15.
Openers Chris Rogers (73) and Rob Quiney (60) put on 137 to have the Vics flying before they lost 4-52 to leave the crucial match evenly poised.
Quiney was the first to go, lbw to Luke Butterworth (1-42) and Rogers was caught behind off James Faulkner (2-43) without a run being added at 2-137.
It was 3-157 when Michael Hill (4) was trapped in front by Faulkner and 4-189 when Marcus Stoinis was also out lbw to one that kept low from part-timer Mark Cosgrove.
Earlier, former Test representatives Rogers and Quiney were largely untroubled on a pitch that has belied its greenish appearance.
Rogers hit nine fours and a six in his top-scoring knock for the visitors.
Needing an outright win to keep their final hopes alive, Tasmania declared on their overnight score before play on Friday.
Showers are forecast in Hobart for days three and four as both sides look to stay in the hunt for next week’s decider with maximum points.
