Man United’s Giggs reaches game 1000

Kick-off in Manchester United’s game with Real Madrid heralded a new milestone in the long career of Ryan Giggs, who was making his 1000th appearance in senior football.

The Welshman, 39, has made 932 appearances for United, his only club, 64 appearances for Wales, and played four times for Great Britain’s men’s Olympic team at last year’s London Games.

Giggs, who signed a one-year contract extension with United on Friday, becomes only the third British outfield player to play in 1000 games, after Tony Ford and Graeme Alexander.

United began the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie at Old Trafford with a slight advantage over Spanish champions Madrid, having emerged with a 1-1 draw from the away leg on February 13.
