Chris Waller will be out to land his first victory in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) when he saddles promising colt Estremo at Caulfield on Saturday.
While the race has not been a regular part of Waller’s pathway towards the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11, the champion trainer has enjoyed Guineas success in the past with Press Statement and The Autumn Sun, who both came down from Sydney to win the classic.
Last year’s Guineas hero Private Life contested the Prelude before going on to claim the main prize, finishing fourth in the lead-up before leading all the way in the Guineas under Damian Lane at $13.
Unlike Private Life, Estremo has already had a solid grounding in Melbourne, contesting two races at Moonee Valley. He finished third behind fellow Prelude rival Space Rider on August 23 and fifth to Rosberg on September 6, both runs over 1200m.
Waller gave the lightly raced colt further experience at Caulfield on Tuesday, taking him for a gallop to familiarise him with the track ahead of his fifth career start.
“I probably made a mistake running him over too short a distance last time,” Waller said. “He was probably ready for 1400 metres last start, and he gets the 1400 metres this week. He’s had a couple of races running left-handed in Melbourne and he’s been running well, so he’ll get his chance on Saturday.”
Ben Melham has been booked to ride Estremo in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.
