A clockwise gallop and the prospect of a rain-affected surface have Mick Price leaning towards sending in-form galloper La Fracas to Randwick for his next assignment on Saturday.
Entered for a pair of 1200m contests — a benchmark 84 at Moonee Valley and a benchmark 78 at Randwick — Price, who trains in partnership with Michael Kent Jnr, will assess the final acceptances before locking in a decision midweek.
La Fracas has impressed with three wins from as many starts this campaign, all over 1200m, including two dominant heavy-track wins and a strong finishing effort at Flemington on July 19.
The Sydney way of going appears no issue for the gelding, who completed a reverse way gallop on Saturday under stable apprentice Olivia East, with Price noting the wet-weather conditions in Sydney were an additional factor.
“He does have a nomination for Sydney,” Price said. “He had a reverse way gallop on Saturday morning because he’s such a good wet tracker and Sydney’s got Noah’s Ark floating down the middle.”
East, who recently returned to riding after recovering from a fractured collarbone suffered in a May 31 fall at Werribee, said La Fracas handled the clockwise gallop with ease.
“He worked the house down,” East said.
Price also considered aiming for the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield next weekend, but a conversation with jockey Blake Shinn swayed him away from the idea due to stronger opposition expected in that event.
“I had a thought to run him in the Regal Roller, I had a chat with Blake Shinn but he had a few high-rated horses that we thought would run there,” Price said.
Although La Fracas has stretched to a mile previously, the stable is opting to keep him to sprint trips while he’s fresh, with Price noting that Moonee Valley’s tighter circuit may not suit the son of Night Of Thunder’s racing style.
“The race has got to be right so what we’ll do is accept for the two races and have a look, because if he draws in at Moonee Valley I don’t think it’s advantageous because he’s a bit of a wind-up horse,” Price said.
“I tried him over a mile last time too and he nearly got it but at the moment because he’s fresh and well, we’re keeping him to 1200 metres, but you may see him in Sydney.”
La Fracas holds a rating of 83 and has been allocated top weight of 62.5kg for the Randwick benchmark 78 and 59.5kg for the Moonee Valley benchmark 84.
