The opening Sydney meeting of the new racing season proved unforgettable for young Central Coast trainer Denim Wynen, who celebrated her first metropolitan victory with new stable acquisition Sunshine Law.
The 29-year-old had previously only sent a handful of runners to city meetings but had high hopes for Sunshine Law based on the mare’s work at home.
“I’m so stoked,” Wynen said.
“My trackwork rider said the first gallop she did on her that she thinks she is quite a serious horse, so for her to say that, I thought, I’ve got a nice horse.”
Previously trained by Annabel and Rob Archibald, Sunshine Law was purchased for $85,000 via an online sale and was making her debut for Wynen at Rosehill.
The four-year-old is one of just six horses Wynen currently has in work, making the thrill of a Saturday metropolitan win all the more special.
“I still can’t believe it’s true,” she said.
“They (owners) actually rang me the day before and said they were looking at a couple of tried horses online.
“They’ve been a big support to my stable over the last six months. They’ve bought some weanlings and they wanted to get to the races sooner, so they decided to go to the tried sales and picked up two nice horses from Yulong.
“I think we’re going to have some fun with her.”
Wynen’s training journey began as a hobby with a few of her own horses before she expanded to take on outside clients two years ago. She credits fellow Wyong trainer Kristen Buchanan for guiding her career.
“I didn’t want to go to school anymore when I was fourteen. My brother was working with horses and my mum said if I got a job I was allowed to leave school,” she said.
“I went and worked for Kristen Buchanan. She took me in and she was like a mum to me and that’s where I’ve been since.”
Sunshine Law ($4.80 in betting) secured a race-to-race double for apprentice Anna Roper, winning the Congratulations James McDonald Handicap (1400m) by half a length over Super Norwest ($7), with Pippie Beach ($4) in third.
