Trainer Peter Moody believes the Spring Carnival might come around slightly too soon for talented filly Ole Dancer, but he remains open to giving her a chance at a feature victory. The promising youngster maintained her unbeaten record with a determined win in Saturday’s $150,000 Senet Gambling Law Expert 2YO Handicap at Caulfield, making it two wins from as many starts.
The 1200-metre contest marked Ole Dancer’s first outing since her debut success at Murray Bridge on March 8. Despite her inexperience, the performance confirmed her quality, with Moody, who trains in partnership with Katherine Coleman, acknowledging her potential while noting her immaturity. “I think she’s a lovely filly and I think she’s got the ability to be running in Spring races but whether she has the maturity will probably be the question mark,” Moody said.
Moody added that Ole Dancer may only need minimal racing to reach a race like the Thousand Guineas. “If she got to a race like the Thousand Guineas she’d probably get there on one run. She’s that type of filly, she won’t need a lot of racing due to lack of maturity. So, she’s still got a lot of growth ahead of her, but you’re only a three-year-old filly in the Spring once,” he said.
The daughter of Vinery stallion Ole Kirk, who is set to be crowned Australia’s champion first-season sire, showed composure and determination under top jockey Blake Shinn. Settling behind leader Cannyworth, Shinn produced Ole Dancer at the 250-metre mark, where she sprinted strongly to secure a one-length victory.
Sent out a $3.90 favourite, Ole Dancer defeated Thanks Gorgeous ($6.50), with Shystar ($9) close up in third. Former Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Cherish Me ($5.50) made her return from a spell but failed to feature, finishing sixth, nearly three lengths from the winner.
Shinn praised Ole Dancer’s attitude and raw ability. “It was instinctive from her point of view and it was very impressive, because she took the gap and was very brave in doing so and then knuckled down well,” he said. “She did it at her first run at Murray Bridge, she showed good ring craft even though she’s relatively young, and she’s got a bright future ahead of her.”
The victory also carried extra significance for Shinn, extending his lead in the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership to eight wins with fewer than two meetings remaining. Punters looking to back Ole Dancer in future feature races can find the best options through leading betting sites.
