Yulong dreams of another Devil Night with Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale buys

Yulong Investments were active buyers at this week’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, driven by the promise shown by their colt who claimed the Blue Diamond Stakes earlier this year.

Devil Night, the two-year-old who stormed to Group 1 success in Victoria’s key juvenile race wearing Yulong’s green and white silks, is back in training with spring goals in sight.

Following his fifth-place finish in the Golden Slipper on March 22—won by Marhoona—Devil Night has been given time to develop, and Yulong’s chief operating officer Sam Fairgray believes the best is yet to come from the John, Wayne, and Michael Hawkes-trained colt.

“He looks fantastic and spelled really well,” Fairgray said.

“John said he was very raw and what he’s done was on purely ability.

“With experience and maturity, we might see a further furnished article.”

Before his Slipper run, Devil Night debuted with a runner-up finish in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude, followed by victory in the Blue Diamond itself. As a $1.4 million purchase, his long-term target could be the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day.

“That’s the ultimate aim with a horse like him, but we’ll just see how he comes up,” said Fairgray.

“Obviously there’s a couple of good options also in Sydney, but John will figure out what’s best for him.

“He’s already a Group 1 winner, so it’s just a matter of looking after him and running in all the right races.”

At the sale, Yulong secured three of just five mares in-foal to Extreme Choice, including Call Di—a daughter of Frankel—for $2.1 million, topping Wednesday’s session.

They also secured Finepoint, a Pins mare, for $1.3 million, and Ravisher, by I Am Invincible, for $900,000.

“Because they’re a rare commodity everybody’s looking for them,” Fairgray said of the Extreme Choice in-foal mares.

“If you can get a good colt by him then I think he’s going to be very, very valuable.”
