Pride Of Jenni wasted no time getting back to business after touching down in Brisbane ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup.
The Ciaron Maher-trained mare landed Tuesday night and was straight onto the treadmill Wednesday morning for a light canter as she prepares for the 2000m weight-for-age showdown at Doomben.
Assistant trainer Jack Turnbull confirmed that the Brisbane-bound mare handled the trip well and settled into her new surroundings smoothly.
“She travelled up last night and travelled well,” Turnbull said. “She had a big drink, then we worked her on the treadmill this morning, she had a canter and a pick of grass. It was all very light, and she’ll have a ride Thursday before tapering off into the weekend.”
Pride Of Jenni is coming off a win at Caulfield earlier this month, and Turnbull says she’s maintained peak fitness without needing extra work since.
“She had two strong gallops on the treadmill where we could monitor her, and Craig Newitt came in for a saddle gallop on Monday,” Turnbull said. “It’s all about maintaining her at this level now — she doesn’t need to get fitter, just stay sharp.”
With a good report from her bloods and no sign of travel stress, Turnbull is optimistic heading into Saturday’s contest.
“She’s an older mare and travelled really well. We’ve done the checks, and everything looks great so far,” he said.
Drawn in barrier one, Pride Of Jenni holds a key advantage according to Turnbull, especially if rain falls leading into the weekend.
“She’s drawn perfectly. If the track gets wet, she handles it, and her on-speed racing style is tailor-made for Doomben,” he said. “Antino is drawn wide in 11, so they’ll have some decisions to make early.”
