Melbourne Cup 2025 qualifier a Choice option

Bankers Choice already holds a golden ticket into this year’s Caulfield Cup, and the talented stayer could be eyeing another spring free pass when he lines up at Flemington this Saturday.

The seven-year-old, trained by Ben, Will and JD Hayes, is among the nominees for the Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes (2800m), a $300,000 staying contest that carries a coveted ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup.

Bankers Choice booked his place in the Caulfield Cup after a determined win in the Mornington Cup (2400m) on April 19, and the Lindsay Park team is now assessing his credentials over a true staying trip.

“We’re just going to see what he’s like at staying,” Will Hayes said. “He’s a horse in form. I thought his win at Mornington was full of merit and we’re just going to have a look at the race. We’re not locked into running yet and we’ll be guided by his final piece of work.”

Among the 28 entries for the Andrew Ramsden are several quality stayers including Athabascan, Berkshire Breeze, Military Mission, Silent Surrente, Smokin’ Romans and Torranzino, setting the scene for a competitive renewal of the 2800m event.

The Hayes team only recently took over training Bankers Choice, having absorbed a significant number of horses from the late Mike Moroney and training partner Glen Thompson on May 1. That transition has already yielded results with wins from ex-Ballymore gallopers Oak Hill and War Machine in recent weeks.

Will Hayes credited long-time Ballymore staffer Anthony Feroce for aiding the stable’s adjustment to their new acquisitions. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and we’re very lucky to have him,” Hayes said. “He’s giving us great guidance and he’s also a great connector with clients.”

Saturday’s Flemington meeting will also feature the Listed Straight Six (1200m), where former Singapore champion Lim’s Kosciuszko headlines the nominations.
