Ascot-based trainer Simon Miller acknowledges the uphill task ahead for Generosity in Saturday’s Group 1 Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville, but insists the Perth mare has rightfully earned her spot among the elite.
Taking on Everest winner and dual Group 1 champion Giga Kick, Generosity enters Adelaide’s premier sprinting contest off the back of strong performances in Western Australia, including a breakthrough black-type win in the Sheila Gwynne Classic (1200m) in March and a gutsy third-place finish in the $5 million Quokka (1200m).
In the Quokka, the daughter of Divine Prophet launched her challenge down the straight and looked a winning threat before being swamped late by Jokers Grin and Headwall. That performance confirmed for Miller that a Group 1 assignment was worth pursuing.
“She’s a beauty,” Miller said on RSN.
“Not many horses enjoy high pressure and can then absorb it and quicken.
“That’s her greatest asset, but unfortunately most of the races she’s been over here (Perth) have been sort of sit and sprints.
“You saw the best version of her in the Quokka and if they run along at a nice clip on Saturday, she’ll be there as well.”
This will be Miller’s fourth attempt at capturing the Goodwood, having previously lined up with Amelia’s Jewel, Valour Road, and First Among Equals. From barrier five in a 13-horse field and with in-form Perth rider Lucy Fiore aboard, Generosity is considered a $17 chance but looms as a genuine threat.
“With the weight of 52 ½ kg, it’s a luxury that she knows the horse and can ride at that weight. It was a no brainer to send her to Adelaide for us,” Miller added.
“Fiore fifo they’re calling her here at the moment. She’s going to Adelaide for one and then I have to get her on the first flight back Sunday for a nice horse in the Group 3 at Northam.”
That horse is West Star, a promising three-year-old by Playing God, who contests the Group 3 Northam Stakes (1300m). He too has a big spring in sight, with Melbourne goals on the radar.
West Star has never finished worse than seventh from seven starts and claimed the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m) last October. His only miss at placing level came in the Quokka.
Giga Kick remains the $2 favourite for the Goodwood. Charm Stone and Ameena sit at $8, with Stretan Angel and Reserve Bank both priced at $9.
