The racing world is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved warriors, Happy Clapper, who has died at the age of 14 following a bout of colic.
Trained by the charismatic Pat Webster, Happy Clapper earned a place in the hearts of punters and fans alike with his determined efforts—especially during his many battles with the legendary Winx.
He faced the champion mare 11 times, finishing second on six occasions, including a memorable runner-up finish by just three-quarters of a length in the 2018 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
Winx’s trainer Chris Waller paid his respects via social media, acknowledging Happy Clapper’s competitive spirit and place in racing history.
“Our thoughts go out to the connections of Happy Clapper and the Webster family,” Waller posted on X.
“He was a horse who we had a lot of respect for; Winx had to be on her best game when running against him because he was capable of anything. He breathed down our neck a number of times and could have easily beaten us had luck gone his way, and against us.
“Well done Pat for what you achieved with Happy Clapper and for what he brought to Sydney racing.”
Happy Clapper delivered Webster his first major win with a brilliant victory in the 2017 Epsom Handicap (1600m). He followed that up with Group 1 wins in the 2018 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and the Doncaster Mile (1600m).
Across a decorated career, he raced 48 times for 12 wins and 18 placings, amassing nearly $7.3 million in prizemoney.
