Horse Racing News: Price, Kent Pivot with in-form gelding

Michael Kent Jnr remains optimistic Pivot City can get back to Stakes grade, but he and Mick Price are maintaining a conservative approach with the rejuvenated gelding.

The one-time boom three-year-old will chase a second win in his first campaign as a gelding in Saturday’s $130,000 Smartloans Bendigo BM84 Handicap (1300m) at Bendigo.

Pivot City resumed with a win at Flemington on March 1 and ran second against the bias at Moonee Valley on March 22, but his trainers are in no rush to test him outside his grade while he is rebuilding his confidence.

“He’s a gelding now, he’s consistent and he’s got a good turn of foot, I think he should run really well,” Kent said.

“He was third in a Group 2 Tobin Broze behind Skybird as a three-year-old and I do think he’s a horse that will go through the grades.

“I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t get to open class, Stakes level in time.”

Pivot City will return to the scene of his brilliant five-length debut win, which had him spoken of as a Coolmore Stud Stakes contender.

He never got to that Group 1 event as a three-year-old and lost his way at his three starts after the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes after which the decision was made to geld the son of Not A Single Doubt.

He has come from the second half of the field in his two runs this time in, but camped just behind the speed in his debut win and Kent was thrilled to see him draw barrier one.

“It’s a big track which should suit his running style, but he doesn’t have to get too far back. He can land close to the speed,” Kent said.

Beau Mertens has the ride aboard Pivot City, who is the $3.50 favourite for what is the final race of the Golden Mile Raceday.
