Filly lines-up for Stakes race debut in Dequetteville Stakes 2025

Trainer Clayton Douglas is aiming to make an immediate impact with his promising two-year-old Blue Hotel, who is set to debut in stakes company in Adelaide this weekend.

The filly will take her place in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1000m) at Morphettville Parks on Saturday, with Douglas hoping to secure early Black Type status for the homebred runner.

While there were alternative options closer to home, including a two-year-old maiden at Cranbourne on Friday night and the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, Douglas opted to send Blue Hotel interstate for her career launch.

By top sire I Am Invincible out of the mare Volcada, Blue Hotel carries strong pedigree and sentimental value. Volcada herself won the Dequetteville Stakes back in 2007 when trained by Douglas’ uncle Rod, who is now racing manager for Blue Hotel’s owner Jonathan Munz.

Blue Hotel heads to her debut off two impressive jump-out wins — first at Balnarring where she defeated Katsumi Orochi, and more recently at Woolamai on March 26.

“She’s trialled up really nicely and is a nice filly,” Douglas said.

“She’s a homebred for Jonathan Munz and the team. She’s out of a nice mare that Jonathan had himself and I’m looking forward to seeing how she goes.

She’s done everything right and she trialled nicely against the older horse’s last time.

Like a lot of things, race experience is key with a lot of two-year-olds, but she’s got the smarts to overcome things.

She’s done everything right. She’s put her hand up and I’m sure she’ll run well.”

Luke Currie, who partnered her in both trials, won’t make the trip to Adelaide due to a full book of rides at Caulfield. As a result, Todd Pannell takes the reins for Saturday’s assignment.

Support has come for Blue Hotel in early markets, firming from $4.60 into $3.90 ahead of her first-up outing.
