Wayne Bennett’s second coming at South Sydney has been overshadowed by catastrophic pre-season injuries, while his initial showdown against the fledgling Dolphins organisation he created is also shrouded in drama – relocated to Sydney due to Cyclone Alfred’s imminent arrival in Brisbane.
It’s an unfortunate disruption for a Dolphins outfit playing its first match under the highly credentialled Kristian Woolf. The club was unlucky to miss the finals in its second season and should only improve as the young spine of Isaiya Katoa, Jeremy Marshall-King and Hamiso Taubuai-Fidow develops.
Junior Tupou is on the wing with Jack Bostock injured, while fellow recruits Daniel Saifiti and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki have been named in the starting pack. Max Plath is in the second-row with Gilbert making a long-awaited return at lock. Kenny Bromwich and Josh Kerr miss the Dolphins’ Round 1 boat.
Souths’ 2025 preparations have been derailed by the season-ending injury to Cameron Murray and medium-term absence of Latrell Mitchell – bitter blows after the Rabbitohs’ disastrous seven-win, second-last campaign in 2024.
Former Test centre Campbell Graham’s early return is a timely boost for the Rabbitohs, who will field Jye Gray at fullback, Jamie Humphreys at halfback with English import Lewis Dodd suspended, and Peter Mamouzelos the new hooker. Lachlan Hubner gets first crack in the No.13.
Alex Johnston and ex-Dolphin Euan Aitken are also out.
Though the Bennett factor seemingly renders this irrelevant, this young rivalry is currently square at one-all. The Rabbitohs powered to a 36-14 win in 2023, while the Dolphins turned the tables 36-28 last season.
The Dolphins’ stability and class in key positions puts them in prime position to get off to a flying start, despite the unexpected road trip.
