Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed emerged as a future Test prospect as he bowled Victoria to an outright victory over Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG on Thursday.
Ahmed, a former Pakistani asylum seeker, took 5-83 from 32.3 overs of brilliant leg-spin as Queensland were dismissed for 249 in their second innings. It left the Victorians just 36 runs for a victory, and the home team quickly dealt with the requirement, winning by eight wickets.
The 33-year-old Ahmed was granted permanent residency in January after leaving Pakistan in February, 2010. He is not yet eligible to play for Australia, but Cricket Australia is seeking clarification of the rules from the International Cricket Council.
His match figures were 7-162, the best by a spinner making his Shield debut for more than 40 years.
