Civoniceva eyeing off Fiji World Cup berth

Proud Fijian Petero Civoniceva is hoping to take an opportunity to represent his country of birth that he missed out on 13 years ago.

The 36-year-old former Australian forward, who is playing for Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup, told AAP on Tuesday he’d spoken to Fijian national coach Rick Stone about being part of his 2013 World Cup campaign.

“I’ve spoken to Rick and told him if the body holds I’d love to be a part of his plans,” said the 36-year-old Civoniceva, who played his first pre-season trial on Saturday night.

Civoniceva revealed he’d come close to pulling on the Bati jumper with another rising NRL star Lote Tuqiri for the 2000 World Cup.

At the time he was just starting his career with Brisbane under Wayne Bennett.

Thirteen years on, the pair may get to play together for Fiji.

“I almost did it back in 2000 before I was even on the radar for Origin or Test selection,” he recalled.

“I was coming back from a broken arm and I spoke to Wayne about it but he wasn’t too keen because I was still getting over my arm injury.”

Civoniceva will have to apply to the International Rugby League Committee for a change of allegiance to make his Test debut for Fiji.

“I don’t think it will be an issue and I would want to make sure I go through all the right processes,” he said.

“It’s something I never thought I would get to do.”

Civoniceva retired from the NRL last season as Australia and Queensland’s most capped forward with 45 Tests and 33 State of Origins for the Maroons.

He said running out for a Test against Australia would feel “very strange”.

“It would be an awesome experience,” he said.
