Big guns set for Titans v Cowboys trial

North Queensland and Gold Coast will pull out their attacking big guns for Saturday’s full-scale NRL pre-season clash in Mackay.

The Cowboys signalled the first appearances of strike weapons Matt Bowen, representative centre Brent Tate and last season’s equal-leading try scorer Ashley Graham.

The Titans will muscle up with the returns of representative stars Ashley Harrison, Greg Bird and Nate Myles.

The classy Titans back-row trio missed the 16-14 trial win over Brisbane at Redcliffe last weekend but coach John Cartwright said they were all expected to take the field for the final hit-out against the Cowboys.

“They should all be right and ready to go,” said Cartwright, who will also use the Mackay trial to settle on his new halves combination, likely to be youngsters Albert Kelly and Aidan Sezer.

Cowboys coach Neil Henry has named a 10-man bench for the trial but has delayed a decision on co-captain Johnathan Thurston, still being treated for a hand injury suffered in his starring role in the Indigenous All Stars’ win earlier this month.

Bowen and Tate both had off-season shoulder surgery but have been named in a strong Cowboys backline.

Meanwhile Brisbane have also named a very strong squad for their final trial against the Warriors in Dunedin, a game tipped to attract a crowd of 20,000.

Coach Anthony Griffin has again paired last season’s halves Peter Wallace and Corey Norman in his starting line-up, with off-season recruit Scott Prince on an eight-man bench.

Youngster Jordan Kahu, who has already played trials against the Cowboys and Titans, partners Justin Hodges in the centres.

Griffin has named skipper Sam Thaiday on the bench for the clash.

Ben Hannant and Josh McGuire are the starting props.
