A capacity field of three-year-olds will step out at Flemington on Saturday to contest another wide-open edition of the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).
Richard Litt’s exciting colt Profondo has been installed as the early favourite after winning last year’s Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick by a dominant margin, while last year’s Victoria Derby winner Hitotsu can also be found on the top line of betting.
There’s also a case to be made for Captivant, Lightsaber, and the undefeated Pinstriped.
The Australian Guineas is always one of the highlights of the Autumn Carnival, and our thoughts on each runner can be viewed below.
1. Hitotsu (2)
- Record: 6:2-0-0
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Victoria Derby)
- Track: 2:1-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace
- Jockey: John Allen
- Odds: $4.80
Hasn’t been seen since winning last year’s Victoria Derby by 1.75L as the favourite. Prior to that, finished fifth to Anamoe in the Caulfield Guineas and has reportedly enjoyed a faultless preparation in the lead up to his return. Likely better suited over further but is a major player if he handles the wet.
2. Captivant (10)
- Record: 13:2-1-4
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Champagne Stakes)
- Track: 1:0-0-1
- Distance: 0-0-0
- Trainer: Peter & Paul Snowden
- Jockey: Ms Jamie Kah
- Odds: $7.00
Showed real improvement second-up for third in the CS Hayes Stakes and has performed well on rain-affected going in the past. Will be better for having a run at Flemington and was a winner over the mile at Randwick in last year’s Champagne Stakes. Jamie Kah just missed out on winning the Blue Diamond for the Snowden’s last week and is in good form.
3. Profondo (15)
- Record: 3:2-1-0
- Group 1’s: 1 (2021 Spring Champion Stakes)
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Richard Litt
- Jockey: Robbie Dolan
- Odds: $4.20
Lightly raced three-year-old that hasn’t put a foot wrong so far. Won on debut at Kensington during the spring and spanked them two starts later in the Spring Champion Stakes before being sent back to the paddock. Might find the mile a little sharp first-up but looked in great order winning last week’s Warwick Farm trial comfortably.
4. Forgot You (6)
- Record: 10:3-0-2
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 4:0-0-1
- Distance: 2:1-0-0
- Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
- Jockey: Mark Zahra
- Odds: $10.00
Flew home from second-last to run fourth in the CS Hayes Stakes first-up. Was unplaced in two starts at Group 1 level during the spring but was far from disgraced finishing three lengths off Anamoe in the Caulfield Guineas. Won at Moonee Valley second-up and is a definite each-way chance with the in-form Mark Zahra steering.
5. Alegron (3)
- Record: 10:1-2-1
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 4:0-1-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: James Cummings
- Jockey: Damien Oliver
- Odds: $67.00
Ridden quietly first-up in the CS Hayes Stakes and failed to make up much ground finishing eighth. Returned a place in both the Spring Champion Stakes and the Victoria Derby during the spring but is likely looking for further.
6. Coastwatch (18)
- Record: 12:3-2-2
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 1:-0-0-0
- Trainer: Chris Waller
- Jockey: Craig Williams
- Odds: $15.00
Went forward first-up and fought off a late challenge to win the Autumn Stakes at Caulfield right on the line. Ran a huge race for third in last year’s Golden Rose behind In The Congo and Anamoe, and typically finds the money second-up. Should be tough to run down again and is worth including in multiples.
7. Lightsaber (4)
- Record: 11:4-1-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:1-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: Peter Moody
- Jockey: Luke Nolen
- Odds: $13.00
Won the VRC Sires’ here at Flemington as a two-year-old and is worth forgiving on his latest effort when second last in the C.F. Orr Stakes. The tempo clearly didn’t suit him that day, but he should be much better suited getting out to the mile now on a bigger track. Has won both starts in his third run back and represents enormous value at the current quote.
8. Ranch Hand (9)
- Record: 12:2-2-1
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 4:1-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: Chris Waller
- Jockey: TBD
- Odds: $17.00
Has made the journey down from Sydney after finishing two lengths behind Anamoe in last fortnight’s Hobartville Stakes. Won a Stakes race at Flemington first-up during the spring and was far from disgraced in both the Coolmore and the VRC Classic. Question mark over the mile, but is rock-hard fit for two runs back and will appreciate any rain about.
9. Pinstriped (11)
- Record: 3:3-0-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:1-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Enver Jusufovic
- Jockey: Michael Dee
- Odds: $8.50
Undefeated son of Street Boss that has risen through the grades in impressive style. Charged home late to win the CS Hayes Stakes a fortnight ago, a performance that suggested he might be looking for the mile now. Wide draw hurts his chances, but he’s proven on all going and should be saving his best for late. This will prove how good he really is.
10. Rhinoceros (5)
- Record: 10:3-1-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 2:0-0-0
- Distance: 3:2-0-0
- Trainer: Emma-Lee & David Browne
- Jockey: Jamie Mott
- Odds: $91.00
Facing Group 1 company for the first time. Proven miler with a couple of wins at Sandown and Caulfield on the board. Settled at the rear in the CS Hayes Stakes and failed to make up much ground. Cannot recommend.
11. Spirit Of Gaylard (8)
- Record: 5:2-0-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 2:1-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Mitchell Freedman
- Jockey: Jordan Childs
- Odds: $41.00
Settled midfield first-up in the Autumn Stakes and faded badly over the final 200m. Untried over the mile and is only going to find this tougher.
12. Sharp Response (12)
- Record: 7:2-2-1
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 2:0-1-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Julius Sandhu
- Jockey: Beau Mertens
- Odds: $41.00
Has run no worse than fifth in seven starts to date. Timed his run well for fourth in the Autumn Stakes and might be looking for the mile now. Should be rock-hard fit for three runs back and a place isn’t out of the question if Beau Martens can offset the wide gate.
13. Prix De Turn (16)
- Record: 5:1-1-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 2:0-0-0
- Trainer: Matthew Brown
- Jockey: Ben Allen
- Odds: $41.00
On the quick backup after dropping in class to win his maiden at Sandown last week. Finished down the straight in the Autumn Stakes and is unlikely to trouble most of these.
14. Zerelle (17)
- Record: 8:3-0-1
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 2:1-0-0
- Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
- Jockey: Craig Newitt
- Odds: $67.00
Finished last in the Caulfield Guineas but has since returned a different horse winning back-to-back starts against easier company at Ballarat and Moonee Valley. Now in search of his hat-trick, but this is a big step up in grade.
15. Pascero (7)
- Record: 3:2-1-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-1-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young
- Jockey: Damien Lane
- Odds: $17.00
Promising colt that has won two-from-three starts to date. Was a clear winner on debut at Sandown in January and went on with it to win a BM64 comfortably. Was gunned down late by Pinstriped in the CS Hayes Stakes and will likely take some catching again.
16. Bon’s A Pearla (13)
- Record: 7:2-0-1
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 1:0-0-0
- Trainer: Kevin Corstens
- Jockey: Brett Pebble
- Odds: $61.00
On a quick backup after running fifth in the Group 2 Armanasco at Caulfield last week. On debut at Flemington and is tough to entertain from the wide draw.
17. Maurice’s Me Dad (14)
- Record: 11:1-1-2
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 0:0-0-0
- Distance: 3:0-1-0
- Trainer: Bjorn Baker
- Jockey: Joshua Parr
- Odds: $34.00
First emergency.
18. Corona Lad (1)
- Record: 3:2-0-0
- Group 1’s: 0
- Track: 1:0-0-0
- Distance: 0:0-0-0
- Trainer: Nathan Dunn
- Jockey: Thomas Stockdale
- Odds: $91.00
Second emergency.
