The NSW Breakers will defend their Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) title in Sunday’s final against the Queensland Fire at the SCG.
NSW qualified for their 17th straight WNCL decider with a commanding 110-run victory over Western Australia on Friday at Blacktown in Sydney.
Winning the toss and batting, the Breakers piled on 5-331 from 50 overs with captain Alex Blackwell smashing 135 not out from just 110 balls.
This was her second hundred of the season and her eighth WNCL career ton, taking her to outright second on the list of all-time WNCL century makers.
Leah Poulton (52) and Alyssa Healy (51) also posted half-centuries, with Lisa Sthalekar (38) and Rachael Haynes (25) also contributing.
Western Australia suffered the worst start possible to their chase, with Ellyse Perry bowling the competition’s second leading run-scorer Nicole Bolton for a duck in the first over.
However, the visitors steered their innings back on track with a 47-run second-wicket stand between Jenny Wallace and Chloe Piparo (21), followed by a 42-run third-wicket partnership between Wallace and New Zealand captain Suzie Bates (20).
The loss of Bates, caught and bowled by Sarah Aley, was a major blow. WA struggled to keep pace with the required run rate and finished well short at 8-221, despite Jenny Wallace posting a career-best 96.
In the other semi-final, Queensland defeated last season’s runners-up Victoria by seven wickets.
NSW and Queensland last met in the finals back in 2005/’06, with the Breakers winning that best-of-three series 2-1, beating Queensland by just two runs in the decider.
That victory started the Breakers’ record streak of seven consecutive WNCL titles.
“That’s a record we are very proud of,” Blackwell said.
