Finch failure won’t bother BBL’s Renegades

Melbourne Renegades coach Simon Helmot admits he wouldn’t mind his in-form captain Aaron Finch failing with the bat.

Finch’s 188 runs from three innings, for only once out, makes him clearly the Big Bash League’s leading run-scorer and a huge reason the Renegades sit unbeaten on top of the table.

While Helmot has confidence in the rest of his batsmen, with Finch having scored 48 per cent of the Renegades’ runs so far, he’d like to see how they fare when their skipper doesn’t contribute.

“It sounds a bit weird, but I look forward to the day when that happens,” Helmot told reporters on Friday, ahead of Saturday night’s Etihad Stadium clash with the Brisbane Heat.

The closest it’s come so far is the one time Finch was dismissed, for 31 against Sydney Thunder, but the Renegades were chasing a modest target of 117.

But Helmot believed his side could handle more testing situations.

“I don’t think we’re a one-trick pony, put it that way,” he said.

Finch’s batting has even prompted a BBL rule change, after he was denied a certain six by the Etihad Stadium roof against the Hobart Hurricanes on Wednesday night.

Hitting the permanent part of the roof, which Finch did, will now count as a six, rather than a dead ball.

Only hitting the retractable section, when the roof is closed, will remain a dead ball.

Helmot said that was a sensible change given Finch’s hit was sailing towards the top tier of the grandstand.

“I was filthy … if that wasn’t a dead ball that would have been the largest six of the competition,” Helmot said.

Brisbane quick Ben Cutting suspected the Renegades might prove vulnerable if the Heat could dismiss Finch early.

“I don’t know if the Renegades have been tested yet with their batting,” Cutting said.

“Finchy and Benny Rohrer have been scoring the majority of their runs.

“So if we can get those boys early, with our bowling attack it’s certainly game on.”

The Heat need a win, after Tuesday night’s heavily rain-affected loss to the Perth Scorchers dragged them to a 1-2 record.
