Roosters big man backs less interchanges

Sydney Roosters prop Jared Waerea-Hargreaves has backed any move to reduce the NRL’s interchange, believing the game’s fittest forwards should be rewarded.

The NRL will consider cutting the interchange limit in each match from eight to six at the end of the year, with chairman Peter V’landys pushing for the move.

The change should see more space created for the game’s smaller and silkier players, particularly late in the game as forwards tire.

But Waerea-Hargreaves can see an upside for himself.

The Kiwi prop regularly churns out some of the biggest minutes in the NRL for front-rowers, and has previously got through 80 minutes of a match unchanged.

“I kind of like it,” Waerea-Hargreaves said.

“It doesn’t really change my role. If anything I would play more minutes.

“Losing two interchanges is probably a good thing for front rowers who start and want to play more minutes.

“If you can start well and take (the opposing props) to stage where they are fatigued, then maybe their other two interchanges come on a little earlier.”

A drop in interchange numbers has been discussed for years.

The game went from 12 to 10 in 2008, and then bumped it down to eight in 2016.

However the impact of that move was largely nullified by the introduction of concussion protocols, giving teams two free changes for every player who went off for a check.

The discussion comes amidst claims that broadcasters have told the NRL the game needs to make changes to become more entertaining.

“I think if we’re looking to improve as a whole and as a game, then that could be an area to focus on,” Waerea-Hargreaves said.

“If we were to limit the interchanges, it’s an area where we could be more expansive in the game.

“The likes of James Tedesco and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck come alive a lot more.

“At the same stage (forwards) have got to make sure your skills are on. You’ve got to make sure you are clean and effective in what you’re doing.”
