The 2020 Golden Slipper headlines a big day of racing at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and we are set for one of the most open editions of the race in recent memory.
Blue Diamond Stakes winner Tagaloa is currently a narrow favourite, but there isn’t much between him and the likes of Farnan and Hanseatic.
We have analysed every single horse in the field and our complete 2020 Golden Slipper tips can be found below.
Tagaloa
Tagaloa is the current favourite in Golden Slipper betting. His victory in the Blue Diamond Stakes was simply enormous – he sat three wide in the worst part of the track and was still able to come away with a maiden Group 1 victory. He was no match for Farnan in the Todman Stakes, but he still ran the best closing sectionals in the race. The Lord Kanaloa colt was the big winner of the Golden Slipper barrier draw and he maps to get a lovely run in transit right on the speed. It takes a very good horse to complete the Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper double and the concern with Tagaloa is that he has already peaked once this campaign. In saying that, there is no doubt that he is a talented colt and he is right in the Golden Slipper mix.
Hanseatic
Hanseatic finished a close second behind Tagaloa in the Blue Diamond Stakes and he has been freshened-up for the Golden Slipper since that run. The fact that he started the Blue Diamond Stakes as a clear favourite does show his ability and he lost no admirers with what was a strong performance. I like the fact that Anthony Freedman has given him a barrier trial in between his race starts and barrier nine gives Kerrin McEvoy plenty of options. The Street Boss colt represents genuine value at his current Golden Slipper odds.
Farnan
Farnan is the horse to beat in the 2020 Golden Slipper. The Not A Single Doubt colt has recorded four wins from his five race starts and his only blemish came when he had excuses in the Magic Millions Classic. The dominance of his win in the Silver Slipper Stakes showed his true quality and he proved that was no fluke with an arrogant display in the Todman Stakes. The wide barrier draw might not be as big of an issue as it appears on paper. He does have plenty of early speed and I think that he does have the toe to cross this field to take up the running. If he is able to do that, he will prove very tough to run down.
Prague
Prague has recorded three wins from his four race starts to date and he has done very little wrong during his racing career. He is on the quick back-up after winning the Pago Pago Stakes and there is no doubt that this is a step-up in class. The Redoute’s Choice colt has probably taken a slightly softer path to the Golden Slipper than some of the other leading contenders and he would need to go to another level again to win.
King’s Legacy
King’s Legacy has been freshened-up since he finished fifth in the Magic Millions Classic. That is a fairly unusual preparation for the Golden Slipper and I wasn’t particularly taken with his barrier trial in the lead-up to his return to racing. You always have to respect a Team Snowden-trained runner in a big two-year-olds race, but I am happy to oppose King’s Legacy in the 2020 Golden Slipper.
Global Quest
Global Quest has raced well without ever really looking like a winning chance in the Canonbury Stakes, Silver Slipper Stakes and the Todman Stakes. Farnan beat him comfortably in both of his Golden Slipper lead-up runs and it is tough to see the More Than Ready colt turning the tables on his rival.
Update: Global Quest has been scratched from the Golden Slipper.
Mamaragan
Mamaragan might be the x-factor in the 2020 Golden Slipper field. He made his racing debut in the Skyline Stakes and surprised punters to record a comfortable victory. There is no doubt that he should improve off that debut effort and he has a stack of upside. It would take a special effort for a horse to win the Golden Slipper in just his second race start and $15 does look around the right mark.
Away Game
Away Game is the value runner in the Golden Slipper field. Her victory in the Magic Millions Classic was simply outstanding and she backed that up with a very easy win in the Widden Stakes. She may have only finished fourth in the Blue Diamond Stakes, but her run was enormous. The Snitzel filly was caught in the worst part of the track throughout and she was still able to tough it out to the finish. Barrier three is ideal and she maps to get a lovely run in transit with Glen Boss in the saddle. $13 is over the odds.
Dame Giselle
Dame Giselle has been a leading contender for the Golden Slipper since she recorded a dominant win in the Golden Gift back in November last year. She flopped as a short-priced favourite in the Lonhro Plate before she was able to return to winning form in the Reisling Stakes. The close nature of the Reisling Stakes finish does leave something of a question mark over the form coming out of that race, but the I Am Invincible filly has shown that she can produce a high-rating performance on her day.
See You Soon
See You Soon has only had three race starts, but she has already developed an excellent rivalry with Dame Giselle. See You Soon beat Dame Giselle on debut in the Kirkham Plate and has since finished second behind her rival in both the Golden Gift and the Reisling Stakes. She ran all the fastest closing sectionals in the Reisling Stakes and she still has the scope to improve.
Mildred
Mildred was an early-running two-year-old that has been able to hold her form deep into the season. She won the Darley Spring Preview at Flemington way back in September and she followed that up with a victory in the Maribyrnong Trial. There was plenty to like about her win in the Chairman’s Stakes and she wasn’t beaten far in the Talindert Stakes and the Reisling Stakes. She doesn’t have the same level of upside as some of the other horses in this field, but there is no reason that she can’t run another strong race.
Personal
Personal was one of the biggest losers of the Golden Slipper barrier draw. She ran some of the fastest closing sectionals in the Blue Diamond Stakes, after being settled in the second half of the field, and she will need to do the same in the Golden Slipper after drawing a wide barrier. I think that she will be giving the likes of Farnan a big start and she will need to be a serious filly to finish over the top of her rivals.
Muntaseera
Muntaseera has raced fairly without really delivering during her Autumn campaign. She ran well to finish fifth in the Blue Diamond Stakes, but she was no match for Minhaaj in the Breeders Stakes. It is very tough to back her in the Golden Slipper on the back of that performance.
Hungry Heart
Hungry Heart earnt her place in the Golden Slipper field with an impressive win in the Sweet Embrace Stakes. That definitely wasn’t the strongest of the Golden Slipper lead-up races, but she is lightly-raced and does still have some upside. It would not surprise to see her produce a better performance than her current odds suggest.
Cellsabeel
Cellsabeel is one of the most interesting runners in the Golden Slipper field. She went to the top of Golden Slipper betting when she bolted in to win at Rosehill Gardens in the Iron Jack Handicap, but she hasn’t been able to replicate that effort in either the Silver Slipper Stakes or the Black Opal. In saying that, she had a very tough run in the Black Opal and was still able to keep finding the line. There is no doubt that the talent is there and she is not the worst $21 chance I’ve ever seen.
Update: Cellsabeel has been scratched from the 2020 Golden Slipper.
Thermosphere
Thermosphere graduated from a maiden at Newcastle to win the Magic Night Stakes at a big price last weekend. The overall quality of the Magic Night Stakes does have something of a question mark over it and Thermosphere would need to improve again to be a genuine winning chance in the Golden Slipper.
Rathlin
Rathlin is the first emergency in the Golden Slipper field. The Fastnet Rock colt has been thereabouts in races like the Magic Millions Classic and the Blue Diamond Stakes, but would need to improve again to be a genuine Golden Slipper contender.
Update: Rathlin has now earnt a start in the 2020 Golden Slipper field following the scratching of Global Quest.
Minhaaj
Minhaaj is the second emergency for the Golden Slipper and would bring an unbeaten record into the race if she does earn a race start. The way that she put away her rivals in the Breeders Stakes was very impressive and there is no doubt that she has upside.
Update: Minhaaj has now earnt a start in the 2020 Golden Slipper field following the scratching of Cellsabeel.
Time Is Precious
Time Is Precious is the third emergency for the Golden Slipper and, at this stage, looks unlikely to earn a start.
Philizzy
Philizzy is the fourth emergency for the Golden Slipper.
