Sixteen fillies and mares will line up in the Group 1 $600,000 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on Saturday with the Melbourne form set to be tested against some slick Sydney form.
The in-form Sylvia’s Mother comes out of Team Hawkes’ Flemington stables and is the winner of her last two races at Caulfield and Flemington and will head back to Sydney chasing a hat trick of wins in the Coolmore Classic.
Sylvia’s Mother will be facing some strong opposition from the John Thompson trained Sweet Deal as well as James Cummings’ Pohutukawa while champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller will have three runners and Newcastle based Kris Lees will saddle up four runners.
We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Coolmore Classic tips can be found below!
Invincible Gem
Invincible Gem has a few tough hurdles to overcome if she is to be a threat in the Coolmore Classic coming off a first-up third in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill on February 22. The Kris Lees trained mare has to carry the top weight of 58kg, has drawn the outside gate in the sixteen horse field and has never won second-up from eight attempts. Has the job ahead of her.
Sweet Deal
Sweet Deal worked her way up through the grades during the 2019 Spring Carnival with three wins which included a victory in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle. The John Thompson trained mare was quick to find Autumn Carnival winning form with a first win in the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15 but was then a close up second as favourite to Dawn Dawn in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight later. Sweet Deal has enough early speed to overcome a middle of the field gate and take up a forward position and will strip as one of the main chances.
Dawn Dawn
Dawn Dawn put herself into Coolmore Classic contention with a near last to first win in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29. Dawn Dawn will likely get back again from barrier ten and will need plenty of luck in the straight to score back to back wins. The Team Hawkes trained mare is stepping up to the 1500m for the first time but was strong at the end of the 1400m last start. Has strong claims.
El Dorado Dreaming
The Kris Lees trained El Dorado Dreaming is another backmarker who finished second to Dixie Blossoms in the last year’s Coolmore Classic but the four-year-old mare hasn’t won a race since her juvenile days which saw her win the 2018 Group 1 Inglis Sires (1400m) at Randwick. El Dorado Dreaming failed to beat a runner home with a first-up ninth in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on February 29 and has filed to win second-up in the past.
Pohutukawa
Pohutukawa has promised plenty in the past and was runner up in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm during the 2019 Brisbane Winter Carnival. Pohutukawa has been placed twice from two starts this campaign, her latest a third behind Dawn Dawn and Sweet Deal in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29. Will get back from barrier five and James McDonald will be looking for plenty of luck in the straight.
Con Te Partiro
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s import Con Te Partiro has been struggling to find winning form since taking out the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone in May last year and is hard to recommend on her first-up sixth in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29.
Sylvia’s Mother
The in-form Sylvia’s Mother heads back to Sydney chasing a hat trick in the Coolmore Classic after wins in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield and in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington. The Team Hawkes trained mare drops 2kg in weight on her last win and Tommy Berry will be able to take up a nice position in the first half of the field from barrier eight. One of the main chances.
Delectation Girl
Delectation Girl is fitter for two runs back from a spell but is stepping up in grade following her latest second in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) last Friday. Andrew Mallyon will be able to save plenty of ground on Delectation Girl from barrier two but will need luck to go his way in the straight to be a threat.
Noire
Noire has failed to impress at two runs back this campaign and is going into the Coolmore Classic on the back of a fifth in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29. Was out of luck at the barrier draw, coming up with gate fourteen.
Oceanex
Melbourne mare Oceanex is resuming and hasn’t raced since winning the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on the last day of the 2019 Melbourne Cup Carnival. The Mick Price and Michael Kent (Jnr) trained mare’s best form has been over longer distances with wins at 1600m, 1700m and 2000m and she hasn’t won first up in the past.
Spanish Whisper
Spanish Whisper ran a handy first fifth in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington February 29 and has good second-up form. The Lindsay Park trained mare has drawn in close at gate three and a nice drop in weight will give her a good chance to be competitive. Has each-way claims.
Miss Fabulass
Miss Fabulass failed to beat a runner home when a first-up sixth in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on February 22. The Kris Lees trained Miss Fabulass is unplaced from three second-up runs and listed as one of the outsiders in the field at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Fiesta
Fiesta has failed to impress at two runs back from a spell and is at long double-figure odds coming off an eighth in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29.
Sweet Scandal
Sweet Scandal wasn’t far behind the placegetters when fourth in the Group 2 Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on February 29 but has the job ahead of her after drawing barrier fifteen.
Benitoite
The Clinton McDonald trained Benitoite showed some improvement second-up when beaten one and a half lengths when seventh in the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 29. The blinkers go on and look for further improvement.
Acting
Acting is one of the outsiders of the field and looks tested on her last start ninth of nine as favourite in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 22. The blinkers come off.
