A line used by Wallabies hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau during the week is fuelling England’s hard-nosed front-rowers who are looking to make a statement of their own when they clash with Australia’s much-maligned scrum at Twickenham.
Australia’s scrum problems resurfaced in Paris for the opening game of the European tour in Paris last weekend where they were dominated in a humiliating 33-6 loss.
The performance ended with a knockout blow by the French pack in the second half when a penalty try was awarded with the Wallabies’ scrum folding on their own line.
England’s scrum has dominated the Wallabies in recent years and they’ll be looking to do the same again on Saturday (Sunday AEDT).
Polota-Nau stirred the pot during the week when he said the Wallabies’ pack was looking to bounce back at Twickenham and “dominate the English scrum”.
The comments have got under the skin of England tighthead prop Dan Cole.
“Any time you go into a Test match or any game of rugby, you want that forward dominance,” Cole said.
“They’ve already mentioned they’ll be looking to dominate us, so bring it on.
“Australia are reeling after getting beaten by France in the set-piece so they’ll come out firing.”
Polota-Nau knows better than most what can happen if the Wallabies don’t take it to the English.
He made his Test debut off the bench at Twickenham in 2005 when the Wallabies pack was ridiculed in the north.
They suffered the ultimate humiliation of non-contested scrums with props Al Baxter and Matt Dunning pushed all over Twickenham.
“It was a tough debut. Things really went pair-shaped for us. We had Al Baxter sent to the sin-bin but since then we’ve improve as scrummaging group and we’re definitely looking forward to bouncing back,” Polota-Nau told AAP.
