Fifth-game player Jason Behrendorff took 4-29 as Western Australia claimed a first-innings lead of 29 against Victoria on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash at the MCG.
The 22-year-old Behrendorff’s career-best figures came off 15 overs and included Victoria’s top order of Chris Rogers (43), Peter Handscomb (13) and Cameron White (0).
Victoria were bowled out for 219 at tea after tailender Clint McKay hit his highest first-class score of 65.
McKay shared an 83-run partnership for the ninth wicket with James Pattinson, who was last man out for 18.
Victoria had resumed on Friday’s second day of play on 0-21 in reply to the Warriors’ 248.
The Bushrangers reached 3-89 at lunch. Behrendorff removed Handscomb and White in successive balls and David Hussey (four) was given out caught behind in a dubious decision in favour of paceman Michael Hogan (2-56).
Rogers and Aaron Finch (34) added 71 for the fourth wicket but both fell with the score on 106.
Finch was lbw to Mitchell Marsh (2-29) and, next over, Rogers played no shot and was adjudged lbw to Behrendorff, prompting a look of shock from the batsman.
Alex Keath (10) became Marsh’s second lbw victim at 6-125 and Test wicketkeeper Matthew Wade fell one run later, caught at second slip for eight off Behrendorff’s bowling.
Former Test quick Mitchell Johnson (2-56) joined the fun by claiming the wicket of Peter Siddle (five), as Mike Hussey pouched his third catch at second slip at 8-135, before Victoria’s tail staged a late fightback through McKay and Pattinson.
